Family Talk
I came across a verse in my bible reading today.
Proverbs 17:6 "Children's children are the crown of old men; and the glory of children are their fathers."
I feel so unworthy of the fact that my father and my father-in-law were truly men that were a glory to their children. Even more so, I am glad to be able to say that my husband is a glory to his children.
This past Saturday on my bus visitation, I knocked on a door. The father came to the door. He is usually very friendly and I respond well to that. In the course of the conversation, I mentioned how much I wish that his 8-9 year old son would ride with his sister. The father's response was that the boy wasn't into religion. I replied that it didn't really matter if a person was "into" religion or not, one day they would stand before a righteous God.
"Well," he answered, "I guess he is just following his dad, and that's not all bad, now is it?"
I felt my insides begin to burn...the very idea that a man would be so cocky! I just couldn't keep myself back. I said..."Well, unless the dad is going to let him follow him to hell!"
His reply was typical! "I think when you die you are just put into the ground and that's the end! You have no proof that there is a hell."
I've tried to argue that one before but this time I just went back to the old faithful argument. "If I die and you are right, then no problem. I will have wasted my time but all is well. If you die and I am right, then you have a BIG problem."
Now that is a man that is definitely no glory to his children.
I talk to men like that each week who care for nothing but themselves. They excuse themselves by telling me that they have to work late and the grass has to be cut and Sunday is the only day they have to rest...such a grief to their families! What happened to the men that were filled with character and humility?
Thank you , Dad for being a man that brings me glory! Thank you, Mike for bringing glory to your children. In both cases there are things about those men that I know to be true. They are honest and hard-working and knowledgeable about scripture and understanding about their place in this world. I don't know why God put me in this position but I acknowledge His goodness and lovingkindness!
